Harry attacks Black, and with Ron and Hermione overpowers him, but Crookshanks stands between Harry and Black when Harry threatens to kill him. Harry feels relieved to have lived to see his thirteenth birthday. Crookshanks stops the tree from attacking Harry and Hermione, and they follow the cat down the tunnel to emerge in the Shrieking Shack outside Hogsmeade. McGonagall treated Draco like porcelain, leaving her stern persona behind and speaking kindly to him even when Draco purposefully did something wrong. Harry notices three owls flying towards him and opens his window to let them in. He pressed a hand to his jacket pocket where his wand was stowed away for reassurance as he opened the door--and choked on his greeting. Late at night, Harry lies in bed under his covers.
However, it's also important to remember what Hagrid said about the dementors: they don't care who's guilty, which suggests that Harry might be in danger. From Ron, Harry receives a pocket Sneakoscope and a letter describing a family trip to Egypt. He is about to turn thirteen years old and it has grown increasingly hard for him to endure his relations' verbal abuse and emotional neglect. His own bloodless face stared at him underneath it, shadows dug deep beneath his eyes, beneath his scars. Christmas comes and Harry gets a Firebolt broom from an unknown Black benefactor, Crookshanks goes after Scabbers again and revives bad feelings between Ron and Hermione, dinner is taken with the teachers, McGonagall takes the Firebolt to check for jinxes. Back at the Leaky Cauldron, Harry overhears Mr and Mrs Weasley talking about the danger he is in.
Maybe he was in shock. He has to sneak his books into his room and do his homework by wand light. Though there were still times he was brood over a drink, he no longer hid it from Harry like he used to. Aunt Petunia, Uncle Vernon, and Dudley are Harry's only relatives, but they're non-magical people muggles and hate magic. Harry noticed that Draco would space out during lessons, draw his wand at sudden movements or sounds, and his night terrors increased dramatically just as Dumbledore suspected. By introducing the third installment of the series with Harry's homework on witch hunts and burnings, the novel makes it clear that justice will be a primary concern of Harry's third year. When the dementor tries to kiss Harry, it reinforces that the dementors, like the Ministry, aren't to be trusted.
